Obituary

Charles J. Ladd, 70, of Toluca died at 9:15 a.m. Saturday (April 23, 2011) at Heritage Manor of Minonk.

A memorial Mass will be at 9 a.m. May 8 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Toluca. Cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment will be at a later date in Reinbeck Cemetery, Reinbeck, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Activity Fund of Heritage Manor, Minonk.

Charles was born Nov. 20, 1940, in Hudson, Iowa, to Charles A. and Arlene House Ladd. Surviving are two daughters, Lisa (Scott) Hoffman of Underwood, Iowa, and Julie (Craig) Inman of Pontevedra, Fla.; one son, Tony (Diana) Ladd of Minonk; eight grandchildren; one brother, Doug Ladd of Reinbeck, Iowa; and four sisters, Enez Rush, Zatha Brubaker and Ercell Witzel, all of Reinbeck, Iowa; and Zelda Studebaker of Jesup, Iowa.

His parents; three brothers, Wayne, Bill and Harry; and two sisters, Wanda and Norma, preceded him in death.

Charles graduated from Reinbeck High School. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Toluca. Charles had retired from the Toluca Garment Factory as a janitor.

Obituary

Hannabel Moore, 96, of Grundy Center, passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center while under the care of the Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 5th, 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Terry Plocher officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will follow funeral services at Rosehill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Hannabel was born October 28, 1914, in Albia, Iowa, the youngest child of James and Mabel Retta (Bain) Gray. She graduated from Albia High School in 1921, and taught rural school in Monroe County before her marriage to Ralph Leland Moore on June 6, 1936. Ralph and Hannabel purchased a farm in Grundy County, Iowa, and were engaged in farming until 1984 when they retired. Hannabel was a member of the Grundy Center Women’s Club, Lincoln Township Homemakers, Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church and the First Presbyterian Church. She was active in the local American Cancer Society, Hawkeye Valley Area on Aging Council and served as the Welcome Lady for Grundy Center for many years.

She was much loved by her daughters Eloise (Gerald) Monk of Grundy Center, Dr. Mary Moore of Riverside, Calif. and Ruth (Kent) Beiner of Dike, Iowa. She is also survived by four grandchildren G. Andrew Monk (Michelle) of Arlington Heights, Ill, Jesse (Sherri) Monk of Marion, Rubyana (Matt) Neely of Dallas Center and Joben Grimmius of Chicago, Ill. and step-granddaughter Brandy (Wade) Schott of West Union; ten great-grandchildren Zachary, Jordan, Alyanna, Nathaniel, Calissa, Sophia & Joseph Monk, Kenton Beiner and Layla & Bowen Schott; 1 sister-in-law Gertrude Craig of Grundy Center. She dearly loved her many Stewart, Moore and Wilkin nieces and nephews.

Hannabel was preceded in death by her husband Ralph; her parents; brother Ernest Gray and sisters Edna Gray, Myrtle Moore, Lois Stewart and Florence Wilkin.

Harmmean J. Smith, 78, of Grundy Center, formerly of Morrison, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center. A funeral service was held on Friday, April 29th at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Matt Miller officiating. A visitation was held on Thursday, April 28th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Burial followed funeral services at the Reinbeck Cemetery in Reinbeck. Harmmean was born on October 2, 1932 in Clarksville, Iowa, the daughter of John & Hulda (Naumann) Adelmund. She attended school in Charles City until the 8th grade and she later received her GED from Hawkeye Tech at the age of 50. She met Harold W. Smith and the two were united in marriage on December 31, 1951 in Reinbeck. The couple welcomed 3 children to their family. Harmmean worked as a CNA and helped her husband with field tiling for many years for area farmers, owned and operated with her husband Smith Tiling. Harmmean lived in Morrison from 1951 until June of 2010, when she moved into the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center.

Harmmean is survived by her children Craig (Crystal) Smith of Cedar Falls, Jinny Grimm of Grundy Center, Vicki Whiteside of Owatonna, Minn. and adopted son Hank (Linda) Dingel of Grundy Center; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; 2 step- grandchildren & 2 step-great-grandchildren; sisters Nancy (Marty) Vahlkamp of Quincy, Ill., Ella Vandeventor of Charles City, Lena (Gary) Nieman of Waterloo and Frieda Dow of Palmyra, Mo.; step-sons Harold D., Roy G. & Melvin Smith; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold W. Smith; her parents; 3 brothers & 4 sisters; 1 great-grandson.
