Obituary

Jarold Lee Lister was born January 31, 1927 at Plano, Iowa, the son of Emory and Maud McGavern Lister. He received his education at Plano and graduated from Promise City, Iowa High School in 1945. Following high school he entered the United States Army and served his country until his discharge in 1947. On August 24, 1947 he was united in marriage to Aileen Scott at the Plano Christian Church. He then returned to further his education at Indian Hills Junior College in Centerville graduating in 1949. He continued his education at Drake University in Des Moines receiving his Bachelor Degree in 1951 and his Masters in 1960. Jerry taught and coached at Beech Community School, Milo Community School, Southeast Warren Community School before moving to Traer in 1962 where he taught Social Studies and coached at the North Tama Schools retiring from teaching in 1988 and coaching in 1994. A large part of Jerry’s life was coaching basketball and baseball in those communities. Over the years he was honored with many awards and accomplishments which included coaching the basketball and baseball All Star games. He was voted Iowa High School District Coach of the Year five times and in 1986 the Iowa High School 2A Baseball Coach of the Year. In 1983 he was inducted into the Iowa High School Baseball Association Hall of Fame and remains one of the coaches in Iowa with the most wins in baseball history. Coach Lister was especially honored by the dedication of the J. L. Lister Baseball Field in Traer. He also was very active in other community activities which included being a charter member of the Milo Lions Club, memberships in the North Tama EA, ISEA, NEA and High School Baseball and Basketball Coaches Association. He also was an active member of the Traer United Methodist Church and Traer American Legion. Jerry’s death came at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at the age of 83 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Harold and sisters Edith Lister Ball, Ila Lister Brindle Erlewine. He is survived by his wife Aileen, daughters Rebecca Lister Zozaya and husband Reinaldo of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and Rozella Lister Stull and husband John of Reinbeck, granddaughters, Megan Stull (Kevin Deeny) of Dubuque, Iowa and Melissa Stull (Jason Burgart) of Minneapolis and a great granddaughter Ella Deeny. Visitation was held on Sunday, July 18, 2010 form 2-6 PM and services 10:30 AM Monday, July 19, 2010 all at the United Methodist Church 512 4th St Traer, Iowa, burial followed at the Buckingham Cemetery in Traer. Obituary

Jay C. Paulsen, 86, passed away Sunday night, July 11, 2010, at the Valley View Villa Nursing Home in Fort Morgan, Colo. He was born September 8, 1923, in Brayton, Iowa, to Walter & Esther Paulsen.

Jay married Frances Petersen in Reinbeck on December 31, 1943. They farmed in the Reinbeck community for many years. In 2001, they moved to Fort Morgan, Colo. While living in Fort Morgan Jay attended Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed watching quarter horse racing. Jay’s favorite past time was spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Frances of Fort Morgan, Colo.; 5 children, Joseph (Mary) of Norwalk, Iowa, Kim (Janyce) of Pocatello, Idaho, Philip (Jo Beth) of Aurora, Mo., Curtis (Cindy) of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Cheryl Becker (Dan) of Brush and 1 son-in-law, Jim Smith; 1 brother, Gordon Paulsen of Paige, AZ; 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Kari Lynn; 2 brothers, Gerald & Allan; and 1 sister, Janice Brandhorst and his parents.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 15, 2010, at 10:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Morgan. Interment followed in the Brush Memorial Cemetery. Verne Paustian, of Reinbeck, Iowa, died Thursday, July 15, 2010, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 10:30 AM, Monday, July 19, 2010, at French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck, Iowa. Burial will be at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Verne Robert Paustian was born in Tama County, Iowa, September 19, 1917. He was the son of Charles and Celesta (Valenta) Paustian. Verne started school in Traer, Iowa. While attending first grade his family moved to Cedar Rapids where he graduated from Washington High School. He worked for six years for Hamilton Seed and Coal Company in Cedar Rapids before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1943. He was discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. After his discharge from the service he enrolled at Iowa State College, now Iowa State University. He majored in Agronomy and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1949.

He was hired as a Agronomist for the Reinbeck plant of Pioneer Hi-Bred Corn Company and started to work in Reinbeck in July of 1949. While working for Pioneer he spent the winter of 1971 in Argentina supervising the production seed corn which was shipped to Iowa to sell to customers in the United States.

He replaced Wayne Brown as plant manager in April 1972. Verne retired as plant manager in January 1981 and continued to live in Reinbeck. He was extensively involved in community activities. He was Scoutmaster of the Reinbeck Scout Troop when he first came to Reinbeck. He was on the Agricultural Advisory Board of the Hawkeye Institute of Technology for six years. He worked with the gifted students in Reinbeck Elementary School for three years. He was a member of the Reinbeck Preschool Board for several years. He also served on several boards and committees of the United Church of Christ in Reinbeck. He was a member of the Community Development Corporation and served as secretary of the group. For a number of years he wrote a column, “That’s Interesting,” for the Reinbeck Courier. The column highlighted Reinbeck businesses and individuals with interesting hobbies or avocations. He was always ready to be part of activities that promoted Reinbeck, or made it a better place to live.

Verne is survived by his extended family; Carolyn Roberts, Christina (Trevor) Schellhorn, Cody (Jon) Bystricky, Catherine (Travis) Boone, Cara Roberts; 3 nephews, Kevin, Jeffery and Dennis Cocayne.

Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mrs. Robert Cocayne and extended family; Steven Roberts and Christopher Roberts.
