Spring planning and zoning workshops for local officials, leaders open for registration
TOLEDO – Local elected officials and community leaders across Iowa can register this spring for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s Introduction to Planning and Zoning for Local Officials, a three-hour workshop focused on land-use issues that shape development patterns, business growth, farmland and access to public spaces.
Workshops in the following locations across Iowa are still open for registration.
-Monday, April 21: Grundy Center City Hall Meeting Room, Conrad
-Wednesday, April 23: Henry County Extension Office, Mount Pleasant
-Monday, May 5: Union County Development Association, Creston
-Tuesday, May 6: Council Bluffs Public Library, Council Bluffs
-Tuesday, May 13: Hilton Garden Inn Des Moines/Urbandale, Johnston
“This workshop helps local officials understand not just what the rules are, but how to apply them in real meeting situations,” said Luke Seaberg, community and economic development specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “We spend time walking through common scenarios officials face, so they’re better prepared when those issues come up in their own communities.”
Workshop topics include comprehensive planning, variances, special uses, nonconforming uses, spot zoning, hearing procedures and ethical considerations. Through case studies, participants will see how these principles play out in practice, from rezoning requests to appeals and public hearings.
“Planning and zoning decisions can draw strong opinions and competing viewpoints,” Seaberg said. “Having a clear framework helps leaders stay grounded in the process and make decisions that are fair, transparent, and defensible over time.”
Registration is $75 per person, with a discounted rate of $65 each for groups of three or more from the same city, county or nonprofit organization.
Customized planning and zoning training is also available by request through ISU Extension and Outreach’s Community and Economic Development unit.
