DES MOINES – Tama County 4-H joined youth from across the state on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026, for Extension and 4-H Voices Day at the Capitol, an annual civic engagement experience that connects young leaders with Iowa lawmakers and offers an inside look at the legislative process.
Tama County 4-H member Belle Werner and Tama County Youth Coordinator Jenny Hulme represented the county, meeting with legislators from across the region. The pair shared stories about how 4-H has shaped leadership skills, boosted confidence, and supported youth involvement in agriculture, STEM, and community service.
The day’s activities included hearing from two Iowa 4-H members currently serving as legislative pages, learning strategies for effectively communicating with elected officials, and practicing how to share powerful personal 4-H stories. These experiences highlighted the widespread impact of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach programs in communities statewide.
Werner, a member of the Toledo Techs 4-H Club, said: ‘This experience was a great way to advocate for 4-H and the opportunities it provides. I was able to speak to legislators about the impact 4-H has made on my life!'”
Hulme added: ‘I was so proud of Belle and the confident way she communicated with our legislators. Her leadership and poise reflect just how much 4H has helped her grow.'”
Throughout the Capitol, youth participants showcased innovative work happening across Iowa in agriculture, STEM, and leadership. The event emphasized how Iowa 4-H prepares young people to play active roles in their communities and future careers.
Extension and 4-H Voices Day at the Capitol was sponsored by the Iowa Extension Council Association and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, with support from the Iowa 4-H Foundation and the Iowa Pork Producers Association.
