Learn how to become a 4-H judge through free statewide training

IOWA – Iowa 4-H Youth Development is inviting community members across the state to take part in its free, statewide virtual judges’ training series, designed for anyone interested in becoming a 4-H judge or refreshing their skills ahead of the 2026 fair season.

The general training series, titled “Evaluate, Educate, Encourage: 4H Judges’ Training,” provides a comprehensive introduction to Iowa 4H, positive youth development, and the expectations of judges who work directly with young people. Adults who wish to judge 4H exhibits at county fairs or the Iowa State Fair are encouraged to complete this training before working with youth. Seasoned judges are also invited to refresh their skills before summer judging begins.

All sessions will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be offered live. Because the training is not recorded, participants must attend a live session to receive credit. Dates are Jan. 26, Feb. 4, Feb. 11 and Feb. 23. Register at https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/iowa-4-h-judges.

In addition to the general training, the 2026 Food and Nutrition 4H Judges’ Update is strongly encouraged for all judges evaluating Food and Nutrition exhibits in 2026. AnswerLine staff will present the 2026 Foods for Iowa 4H Fairs guidelines during this update. This session will be recorded and made available at a later date. Judges are encouraged to register even if they have a scheduling conflict so they can receive followup information, resources, and notification when the recording becomes available. Register at https://form.jotform.com/260047118271147.

New this year, Tama and Marshall County Extension are co-hosting a Horticulture Judging Workshop on February 27, 2026, from 1:00-3:30 p.m. at the Marshall County Extension Office, 2608 S. 2nd St., Marshalltown. A snow date is scheduled for March 6. Participants will learn: Overview of horticulture fair exhibits, judging criteria for exhibits, handson judging exercises, information on preparing exhibits for fairs, case studies on interacting with 4Hers as a judge. Please register at least one week prior to the workshop at: https://go.iastate.edu/YVSVIB.

Judges play a vital role in helping 4H members learn, grow, and reflect on their project work. Through supportive conversations and constructive feedback, judges guide youth in setting goals, developing skills, and taking pride in their accomplishments.

All training opportunities are free and open to anyone interested in supporting youth through the 4H judging experience. Community members with expertise in project areas, a passion for youth development, or a desire to contribute to the fair are encouraged to register.

4H is a handson youth program that builds leadership, confidence, and real life skills. In Iowa, 4H is part of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, helping young people learn, lead, and grow. These programs and more are open to all youth!
