REINBECK – Seventh and eighth graders at Gladbrook-Reinbeck stepped into the world of agriculture careers on Thursday, Nov. 13, during a special event hosted in partnership with Tama County 4-H and Grundy County 4-H.

The afternoon program featured a variety of hands-on learning sessions designed to showcase the diversity of opportunities in agriculture:

-Farm Bureau: Students tested their knowledge of agriculture careers in an ag bingo game

-Ag Commodity Carnival: Led by Iowa State University students, this carnival-style activity helped youth understand the economics of raising livestock and crops.

-Iowa Corn Trailer: A mobile exhibit highlighting the importance of corn in Iowa’s economy and everyday products.

-New Century FS Inc: A technology-based experience where students tried their hand at precision agriculture through simulation.

-Grundy Soil & Water Conservation District: Demonstrations on conservation practices and the importance of protecting Iowa’s water resources.

Educators emphasized that agriculture is more than farming – it’s science, technology, business, and environmental stewardship.

“These sessions give students a chance to see the extent of careers available in agriculture,” Tama County Youth Coordinator Jenny Hulme said. “We want them to walk away inspired and curious.”

The event underscored how community partnerships can bring agriculture to life for students, blending fun activities with career exploration. By connecting local organizations, universities, and industry leaders, G-R is helping prepare the next generation to understand agriculture’s role in Iowa and beyond.
