TOLEDO – Last week’s Tama County Board of Supervisors meeting started, as it often does, with Tama County Engineer Ben Daleske giving his weekly report.

Daleske reported they are doing some ditch digging near 260th Street and C Avenue, while the cutting of berms and re-graveling on H Avenue south of 370th Street has finished. The spray patcher is out taking care of a few roads, and they are blading through rough dust controls. They will go through all of them when November begins. They are waiting for the guardrail and the seeding for the E43/Duponda project, the detour for which has been taken down. PCI on S Avenue is waiting for the deck to cure. Manatt’s has finished work on the gravel side roads, and they will be working on getting the plant set up in Montour this week.

Comprehensive Land Use Plan

The biggest item the supervisors discussed was the development of a Comprehensive Land Use Plan. Such a plan is required under Iowa Code Chapter 18B, and Tama County does not currently have one. The supervisors took the first step in rectifying this issue by approving the resolution directing the Tama County Planning and Zoning Commission to make developing such a plan a priority. Region 6 Resource Partners will help in writing the plan. Supervisor Heather Knebel talked about the plan while also referencing a citizen’s question regarding the possibility of an industrial solar ordinance.

“We do have to have, talking to other counties, we have to get this comprehensive land use plan in place first before — your question on the industrial solar ordinance — we have to get that in place first because that should be the guidance to any new ordinances that are created,” Knebel said.
