Local fire departments helped ignite learning among students at both Gladbrook-Reinbeck and GMG last week as part of Fire Prevention Week. On Friday, Oct. 10, Reinbeck Fire and EMS stopped by the elementary and Little Rebels Learning Center campuses in Reinbeck, while Gladbrook Fire & Rescue visited GMG Elementary in Garwin. In Reinbeck, grade level groups attended educational stations about trucks, equipment, and the department’s role in providing assistance, according to a social media post. As in years past in Garwin, firefighters tailored their visits by grade to teach fire safety awareness including allowing second-graders to practice evacuating through a window and sixth-graders to practice fire extinguisher training outside by putting out a live fire. “The Reinbeck Fire Department once again went above and beyond to show our students the many different trucks and tools they use when putting out fires and when attending to emergencies. They also talked with our kids about fire safety. Thank you for a job well done!” G-R posted to social media. “Thank you to the Gladbrook Fire Department for coming to GMG Elementary to teach each grade level about Fire Safety!” GMG similarly posted. Fire Prevention Week is observed annually during the second week of October by fire departments across the U.S. and Canada.
