Fermentation workshop coming to Toledo Aug. 5

TOLEDO – Build your confidence in small-batch fermentation with safe, simple methods that support product consistency, food safety, and future business growth during a hands-on workshop on Aug. 5 from 1-3 p.m. The workshop will be offered at ISU Extension and Outreach Tama County in Toledo. Holly Van Heel, a human sciences educator with ISU Extension and Outreach, will lead the workshop.

“This fun, hands-on pilot workshop will help aspiring food entrepreneurs, cottage food producers or home cooks and food lovers learn fermentation basics and safety, storage and shelf-life best practices, and how to identify successful vs. failed fermentation.”

During the hands-on workshop, participants will:

-Prepare and pack ingredients to begin your own batch of fermented vegetables, such as kimchi.

-Practice using fermentation equipment and safe techniques with step-by-step guidance.

-Start a take-home batch and learn how to monitor it through the final stages of fermentation.
