REINBECK – Reinbeck American Legion Post 242 held Memorial Day services on Monday, March 26, at area cemeteries including Reinbeck, Amity, St. Gabriel Catholic, and Morrison.

The day began at 9 a.m. at the Memorial Building where the Legion, Auxiliary Unit, and Sons of the American Legion hosted a service. The National Anthem was performed by the Gladbrook-Reinbeck band followed by the opening prayer which was given by Pastor Kevin Richter of St. John’s Lutheran Church-Reinbeck.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Auxiliary President Kathy Beenken followed by the Memorial of the Day given by Legion Commander Rick Ogle.

Pastor Richter ended the program with a closing prayer.

A similar opening format was followed at the four area cemeteries beginning with Reinbeck Cemetery. Following the opening prayer, members of the Legion Family conducted the Placing of the Wreath after which the Legion’s firing squad performed ‘Salute to the Dead.’ Taps was played to close out the service.

According to Commander Ogle, “It was a beautiful day and our services were well attended to honor those who gave their life for our freedom!”

Ahead of Memorial Day this year, Legion volunteers placed 440 crosses in area cemeteries.
