GARWIN — Lilly Bru, Iowa’s 2024 Pork Queen, was the featured speaker at the Garwin Lions June 13 meeting.
Bru is the daughter of Laura and Ryan Bru, of rural Gladbrook, where the family is engaged in row-crop farming. She was elected the Iowa Pork Queen in January of 2024. The selection process consisted of completing an autobiography and participating in interviews and other tests.
Bru attended the Florida State FFA convention and related stories from her time spent there. After the Florida convention, she is mandated to do 100 hours of activities related to her office and is required to attend the Iowa Pork Expo and Iowa State Fair as part of her duties. She has 275 hours as of the Lions meeting. She enjoys going to classrooms and educating students about the pork industry and her experiences.
Bru graduated in the spring of 2024 from GMG Community School, which she had attended since 4th grade. She appreciated GMG’s class size and the education she received. Bru will be attending DMACC in the fall with plans to eventually attend Iowa State University, majoring in agronomy.
She certainly has a passion for the pork industry and stated that 147,000 Iowans are employed in industry-related fields. Bru still shows pigs and lambs at the fairs and spoke about the preparation needed.
The members were impressed with her poise and presentation and thanked her for taking the time to speak to the club.
