Garwin Freedom Days set for July 6
Two-day festival schedule packed with family-friendly activities
GARWIN – From lawn mower races staged through the downtown to a barbeque contest, hog roast, kiddie tractor pull, fireworks, and more, Garwin’s annual Freedom Days festival features something for everyone! The two-day event sponsored by the Garwin Enrichment League will kick off on Saturday, July 6, this year. See below for a full schedule of events.

In conjunction with the July 4 holiday, there will also be a Quilts of Valor presentation taking place on Wednesday, July 3, at 4 p.m. in Garwin City Park.
Saturday, July 6 Freedom Days events
-The Garwin Freedom Days Amateur BBQ Contest will take place on the NE corner of Third and Main streets. Contact Sean Ratliff at garwinfreedomdaysbbq@gmail.com to participate.
-The Garwin Lions Club breakfast will take place at the Community Building in Garwin City Park from 7-10 a.m.
-The Wayne Judge Sr. Memorial Antique Power Show will take place from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. with a tractor ride at 2 p.m. Contact Joe Parks at 641-750-6670 for more information.
-A 3-on-3 basketball tournament will take place at 10 a.m. in the Garwin City Park. Contact wolverineyouthbball@gmail.com for more information including registration.
-Kids inflatables will be on deck in Garwin City Park from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Purchase an all-day bracelet pass for $5.
-Red Dirt Road based in Marshalltown will be performing ‘good ole country music’ on the Garwin City Park bandstand from 10-11 a.m.
-A bags tournament will take place in front of the Garwin Bull. Sign up at noon; bags fly beginning at 1 p.m. There will be a raffle and 50/50 drawing with proceeds going toward GMG scholarships.
-Vendor/merchant showcase open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. “under the hoop” at Garwin City Park.
-The Garwin Freedom Days Firecracker Lawnmower Races are back for a second year! Sign up north of the American Legion from 10:30-10:50 a.m. A driver meeting will take place at 10:50 a.m. with races to start at 11 a.m. from Third to Main streets. There is a $20 entry fee per team. -Garwin Fire Dept. hog roast at the community building in Garwin City Park from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
-Kiddie tractor pulls for ages 5-10 under the hoop building in the city park. Sign up beginning at 12:30 a.m.; pulls start at 1 p.m.
-The Garwin Public Library’s story + craft time including ‘silly tattoos and other fun things’ will take place at Garwin City Park beginning at noon.
-The Boy Scouts’ concession stand will be open in the city park beginning at 1 p.m. and lasting through the start of evening fireworks.
-The Tama County Cattlemen and Garwin American Legion will also be serving up delicious food throughout the day.
-Exit 185 – ‘A fun, high energy cover band playing a wide variety of music including 80s rock, pop, modern and country’ – will be performing from 6-9 p.m. at the Garwin City Park bandstand.
-Starlight Entertainment DJ will be performing from 9:30 p.m. to midnight at the Garwin City Park bandstand.
-Last but never least, fireworks are set to begin at dusk in Garwin City Park!
Sunday, July 7 Freedom Days events
-A Community Church Service begins at 9 a.m. under the hoop building in Garwin City Park.
-Bake sale set to begin following the service. The GMG Girl Scouts will also host a lemonade stand.
