Grundy Co. Heritage Museum Open House set for March 3

MORRISON – The annual Heritage Museum Open House will take place on Sunday, March 3, 2024 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Grundy County Heritage Museum at 204 Fourth Street in Morrison, Iowa. This is a free event. Come and tour the museum and enjoy free refreshments

Special guest speaker, Michael Huston will be at 2:00 p.m. Huston is a 2004 graduate of Iowa State University who majored in agricultural education. Huston would consider himself an amateur historian at best, but he credits his love of learning and teaching for his strong passion for educating others on Iowa’s involvement in the Civil War.

He was first published in Military Images magazine in 2021 with an article titled “The Pride of Washington County” which was about a large photo composite of Civil War soldiers from Washington County, Iowa.

In 2022 he started a Facebook group titled “Iowa Civil War Images.” Since 2022 he has utilized this Facebook group to catalog identified images of Iowa Civil War soldiers. The group has grown to over 2,100 members who have shared over 2,500 images of Iowa soldiers. Huston believes that this is the largest digital collection of Iowa Civil War Images in the world.

Most recently Huston was featured on Civil War Digital Digest where he narrated an episode about the “University Recruits” of Upper Iowa University.

You’re sure to leave this presentation with MORE knowledge than you came with. He plans to also weave some local Grundy County history into the mix as well.

We encourage you to bring any images that you may have of your ancestors and our speaker has offered to make archival scans of them.
