February Newsletter from Tama County Conservation
I’ve got lots of updates this month! Firstly, Tama County Conservation is hiring staff for the summer of 2024! These positions would be great for high school or college students looking to take their first step into the world of conservation. We have openings for an environmental education intern and conservation aides. More information here: https://www.tamacounty.iowa.gov/news/2024_conservation_summer_jobs/
This month’s OWLS presentation is on Animal Adaptations and will include visits from our live turtle and hedgehog animal ambassadors. It’s sure to be lots of fun! It will be on February 13 at 11 a.m. at the Tama County Nature Center: 2283 Park Rd, Toledo, IA. We will have light snacks and drinks available during the program. This program is free and intended for seniors, but all ages are welcome!
Speaking of owls, we are also partnering with 4-H to host an evening owl program called Night Owls Camp intended for grades 4-8 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on February 15. We will dissect owl pellets, talk about adaptations, explore owl sounds, and go on an owl prowl near the nature center. Meal provided with registration. Registration is due by February 9. $10 cost. To register, contact the Tama County Extension Office at 641-484-2703 or jhulme@iastate.edu
Additionally, we are hosting a Homeschool Adventures program for kids K-6 from 1-2:30 p.m. on February 26. This month, we will be exploring animal signs like tracks and scat. We will read a story together, play poop bingo, make our own animal track art, and explore the great outdoors for animal signs. Dress warm and come prepared to learn about poop! There is no fee for this program. However, pre-registration is required by February 20 before 4 p.m. Register by calling 641-484-2231 or email tccb@tamacounty.org. Cancellations will be announced on Facebook and registrants will be contacted via email or cell phone.
