TOLEDO – The three local citizens that make up Tama County’s precincting board showed up at half past eight on Monday, Jan. 8 for a meeting to approve the final version of the new supervisor district maps which move the county from three supervisors to five.

The appointed board members who have been working on the maps for months are Joe Boll, Mike Wentzien and Richard Arp.

Several months ago, after having done their best cartography work, the board sent a new map to the state for approval. This is when a bit of confusion took place. The state responded by saying they are the ones that make the maps, not the county.

This brings us to the Jan. 8 meeting. The state ended up using the map that the local precincting board made albeit with one minor change: one small square in Tama Township needs to be moved from one precinct to another.

The board then worked to set terms for the new 2025 Tama County Supervisor districts by drawing lots. Districts one, four, and five will have four-year terms beginning in 2025, while districts two and three will have two-year terms.

All five supervisor offices will be on the November 2024 general election ballot.

Monday’s meeting brought only one citizen to comment regarding the new precincts.

After a little discussion, the board approved the new maps.

Public hearings for final approval on the maps are set for Jan. 22, 23, and 24.
