SOLON — The clock struck midnight on the GMG baseball team’s Cinderella run as the Wolverines fell 7-0 to ninth-ranked Lisbon in the Tuesday, July 11 Class 1A Substate 4 final.

The Lions (25-4) advanced to the state tournament for the third year in a row, riding the right arm of senior Hunter Clark. Clark allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out 10 in the complete-game performance on the mound.

Wyatt Jackson got the first hit for GMG with his two-out single in the top of the fifth inning, and fellow senior Noah Teske’s two-out single in the sixth was the Wolverines’ only other base knock.

Zach Duncan pitched five innings for GMG, taking the loss. He allowed six runs before being relieved by fellow senior Brayden Duden for the final two frames.

Lisbon scored in four of its six at-bats to earn its return trip to the state tournament.

GMG closes with an 11-15 record that included three wins in the postseason. The Wolverines were down to their final out before scoring six times in the top of the seventh inning to beat Montezuma 8-3 in the first round of district play, and GMG rode the momentum from there. The Wolverines stunned Gladbrook-Reinbeck, 7-2, and beat BGM, 8-4, to avenge their first two losses of the season.
