Grundy County – Families in Grundy County are increasingly in need of food. The number of families using the Food Pantry is up by 21% over the first three months of the year. In addition, donations are down by 37%.

In response, the Pantry is putting out a call to individuals and organizations for both monetary and food donations.

Brenda Curry-Thompson, Grundy County Coordinator, states, “We are running low on almost everything. We are especially in need of meat, canned vegetables, canned fruit, soups of all kinds, peanut butter, cereal and baby food. Of course all types of donations are more than welcome.”Operation Threshold’s Food Pantry does partner with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. Being able to get food items from the Food Bank stretches our food resources further.

In addition, some relief is also provided directly by the Northeast Iowa Food Bank which provides food to Grundy County residents with their Mobile Food Pantry. However, with requests for food arriving from four to five families per day, there is still a great deal more need than capacity.

Executive Director, Barbara Grant shares, “We are seeing more and more families that have been affected by the high prices of food and fuel, and are now in need of help. We can’t meet the needs without the support of the community. Grundy County is an extremely caring and generous community. We’d like to thank those who have donated to us in the past and ask them to consider giving again. If you’ve never donated before, we also welcome your contribution.”

The Grundy County Food Pantry is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to noon, and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-5 p.m. Households can visit the food pantry one day each week during pantry hours.
