Grundy County Memorial Hospital to hold free Mini Medical School

After a couple of years of virtual classes, Grundy County Memorial Hospital is excited to bring Mini Medical School back in person for three sessions in November. Each class provides an opportunity to expand your knowledge of health and comon medical problems. The Tuesday evening sessions are free to the public and you may attend one class or all three. Local medical professionals will inform you on the following topics:

Tuesday, Nov. 8 – 7:00 p.m.: Pelvic Health For All Bodies – Dr. Samantha Bissen, Shelby Walsten, PT, DPT, ATC, and Catherine Yim, PT, DPT

The pelvic floor isn’t just a clever name; it’s literally the floor of your pelvis. The pelvic floor is critical because of the major functions it performs. We can take these vital tasks for granted….at least until something goes wrong. Learn about the anatomy of the pelvis, common diagnoses and how physical therapy can help if you have issues. Spoiler alert – this is important for ALL people, not just women!

Tuesday, Nov. 15 – 7:00 p.m.: Our Brains on Laughter – Megan Heise, ARNP, and Teddy Widdel, Laughter Yoga Therapist

Have you ever heard the term that laughter is the best medicine? Well there may actually be some truth to that! Learn the science behind positivity and laughter from a mental health nurse practitioner and then experience the tools of laughter with a short laughter yoga session. Come ready to have fun and laugh a lot!

Tuesday, Nov. 22 – 7:00 p.m.: Insulin Resistance, Blood Sugar and Diabetes – Deb Van Dyke, DNP, ARNP

Did you know that, according to the CDC, approximately 1 in 3 U.S. adults have prediabetes? Avoid becoming a statistic with this session, which dives deep into the progression from higher than normal blood sugar to type 2 diabetes and how to treat and manage it. Learn about steps you can take to be proactive and some of the services GCMH has to help with preventing and managing diabetes.

Pre-registration is requested in order to plan for materials and refreshments. Visit uph.link/GCMHEvents or call 319-824-4147 to RSVP. All classes begin at 7:00 p.m. in the hospital’s Education Room, 201 East J Avenue, Grundy Center. Use the hospital’s west entrance. Thanks to a grant from the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Foundation, the mini-medical school sessions are free of charge.
