Maxwell to seek reelection in new House District

Announcement creates competitive GOP primary with Fisher

State Rep. Dave Maxwell (R-Deep River)

Representative Dave Maxwell (R-Deep River) announced this week his reelection bid for the Iowa House. Maxwell currently represents House District 76 comprising all of Poweshiek County and twelve townships in Iowa County.

Under the newly confirmed redistricting maps, Maxwell will run for House District 53 which contains the entirety of Poweshiek County and most of Tama County excluding the northeast corner of Buckingham, Geneseo, Perry, and Clark townships.

Rep. Dean Fisher (R-Montour) previously announced his intentions to run for reelection in the new House District 53. Fisher currently represents House District 72.

As a result of redistricting, the two Republican incumbents have been placed in the same statehouse district with Maxwell’s announcement thereby creating a competitive Republican primary for the new seat.

This year’s primary election is set for Tuesday, June 7.

“I think I have done a very good job serving District 76 and I regard myself as a ‘common sense conservative’,” Maxwell said in a press release announcing his intention to run again, “and as such I can work across the aisle when needed and also work with my Republican colleagues.”

Maxwell was born and raised in rural Deep River. He attended Deep River Independent through junior high before graduating from Montezuma Community High School.

Following graduation, Maxwell attended the University of Northern Iowa for two years and Iowa State University for two years before his education was interrupted by military service.

After serving three years in the United States Army – one year in Vietnam – Maxwell returned to Iowa and worked for his cousin in the farm drainage business. He went on to start Maxwell Tiling, Inc. and has been in business in the same location for the past 47 years.

Maxwell is married to Kristin Armstrong. Between them, they have four children, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. MaxwellI belongs to the United Church of Deep River, LICA, AGC and American Legion Post #296 of which he is a past commander.
