The traditional Flag Raising Ceremony on the first day of school, August 23, was held at the GMG Elementary Green Mountain campus. The Gladbrook American Legion and Auxiliary conducted the ceremony. Members of the Legion Color Guard presented the flags.

Gladbrook Junior Auxiliary members Bryleigh Bartel and Brayla Davis assisted Principal Chris Frimml in raising the flag.

Frimml welcomed students, staff and guests. He stated, “We must be very respectful around our flag. And when the National Anthem is played we hold our hands over our heart.”

Trudi Scott, Gladbrook Legion Auxiliary Treasurer, was the featured speaker. She told the students, “Patriotism is showing a love for our country and when we think of the red, white and blue of our flag we think of the United States.”

Ms. Scott told the children, “When we say the Pledge of Allegiance it means we will be loyal to our community and country and when we sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” it means we are proud to be an American.” She also told the children, “We can volunteer to be patriotic, we can help people even if they don’t ask, we are all Americans and we all can be patriotic.”

It was a touching moment as the GMG Elementary children and staff attentively watched as the American Flag was raised. They also said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the National Anthem.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and Music/Education Chairman Sue Koster led the singing of the National Anthem.

The colors were retired and the elementary children embarked on their first day of school, 2021.
