Fatal car accident claims the life of Gladbrook resident

A Gladbrook man died this week following injuries sustained during a car crash on the morning of June 17 in Waterloo.

Brandon Allen Oettchen, 30, of Gladbrook was ejected from the Chevrolet Equinox van he was driving after it was struck by another motorist around 9:15 a.m. last Thursday at the intersection of Sergeant Road and Martin Road in Waterloo.

Oettchen was transported to MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center with serious injuries and later died June 23 while still hospitalized.

A passenger in the van, Ethan Jeffrey Charley, 30, of Traer, was partially ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over, crossing the grass median and coming to rest on its side in the opposite lane.

Paramedics from Waterloo Fire Rescue also transported Charley to MercyOne in Waterloo with injuries. No information was available on Charley’s condition, though he is believed to be recovering.

The driver of the Equinox, Rebecca Bedard, 66, of Waterloo, was not injured in the collision and was cited by Waterloo Police with a failure to yield violation as a result of the accident.

Waterloo Police officials indicated investigation of the incident was ongoing, but as of press deadline Wednesday, no additional charges had been filed.

The collision occurred as Oettchen’s van was traveling north on Sergeant Road and was struck broadside by Bedard who was attempting to cross four-lane Sergeant Road headed east on Martin Road.

The accident report said Bedard had cleared traffic in the southbound lanes, but upon entering the northbound lanes, failed to yield and struck the Chevy van on the front, driver’s side fender, initiating the rollover.

Waterloo Police and Waterloo Fire Rescue responded to the incident and were on scene shortly after the crash happened.
