GMG will welcome a new Superintendent for the 2021-22 school year.

Kym Stein, of Tama, will take over the part time Superintendent duties July 1.

“My primary goal is to build a strong rapport with the school board. To implement their vision by making day to day decisions about educational programs, spending, facilities, being present in the district and knowing staff, students and community while establishing a positive culture and climate,” Stein said in a letter to staff.

Stein has been an educator in the state of Iowa for 34 years. She most recently served at the Des Moines Public School District as their Early ACCESS consultant for the zero to three year old program.

Stein’s run in education has included roles such as elementary teacher, special education teacher, middle school math and science teacher, building administrator, school improvement consultant for Area Education Agency 267, student services coordinator, special education director and director of instruction and curriculum.

She earned her Certificate in Advanced Studies in Superintendence from Iowa State University. Stein also holds a Masters degree in Curriculum and an undergraduate degree in K-8 Education from Buena Vista University.

“My energy comes from a strong belief that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially,” Stein said.

Stein’s desire as an educator is to help administrators and teachers meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing a safe environment, supporting risk-taking, and inviting sharing ideas. It is essential to continue working toward a united school district with trust, solid relationships, and a door open to all stakeholders.

Stein has been married to her husband Mike for 25 years. She is the mom of Christopher Laughlin and the late Denise Laughlin. Denise passed away in a single car accident in 2011. Due to her passing they are raising 14 year old granddaughter Kayleah.

Stein enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing volleyball, golf and swimming. She also enjoys traveling to different countries, reading and working collaboratively with colleagues.

Currently Stein is getting to know the staff at GMG, getting the lay of the land and meeting with key department heads.

One of Stein’s first big tasks will be filling the High School Principal job that will be vacated by Nathan Kleinmeier following the end of the school year.

Round robin interviews will be held for five candidates May 19. Candidates will meet with parents, students, teachers and board members.

Stein hopes to announce a new principal the week of May 24.

“My door is open and I welcome input on how we can continue to make GMG a great school district,” Stein said.
