Track teams at Gladbrook-Reinbeck and GMG got their seasons started this week with meets on Monday and Tuesday.

Both girls teams were in action at the BCLUW Early Bird meet on March 29.

The Wolverines and the Rebels both competed with undersized squads, finishing 10th and 11th respectively in team scoring.

The top finisher of the day was Belen Ellenberger, with a third-place run in the 400-meter dash (1:08.32) and a fourth-place finish in the long jump.

Sydney Vavroch’s second-place finish in the long jump led GMG’s 12-point tally. The other four points for the Wolverines came in relays.

Girls Team Standings — 1. Dike-New Hartford 111, 2. Hudson 103, 3. Grundy Center 90, 4. North Tama 63, 5. BCLUW 53, 6. AGWSR 44, 7. South Hardin 36, 8. East Marshall 35, 9. West Marshall 30, 10. GMG 12, 11. Gladbrook-Reinbeck 9, 12. Waterloo Columbus 2, 13. Colo-NESCO 1.

The G-R boys track and field team started their season on March 30 at East Marshall, finishing last with 18 team points and missing some runners.

One big bright spot was high jumper Logan Giesking, who took home first place in the event at 5-10. Paul Brockett finished fourth in the 3,200-meter run and then ran fifth in the 1,600-meter event.

Coach Jay Beichley said it was good to get a strong result from Giesking, who is already close to reaching his season goal in the event.

“Logan did a good job,” Beichley said. “He wants to get six feet this season, and he hit 5-10 today, so for a first meet that’s pretty good. We have a mark, now we can keep working towards the next one.”
