JV Rebel Football by Coach Mike Bengen

The G-R Rebels hosted Colo-Nesco on Monday September 17 following the junior high game. It was a steamy September evening for football but we were ready to go. After a setback last week at the hands of Tripoli, we were focused and ready to prove we were a better team than what we showed last week. We came out somewhat flat again this week and part of it was the heat and humidity I am sure but we need to get past that. We had no fire or energy on the filed or on the sideline. As the game wore on we responded and our intensity and focus improved. Toward the end of the first quarter after a Col score, we tallied a score of our own on a Tom Smith 12 yard quarterback scamper. Tom’s PAT run knotted the score at 8. The second quarter we were still kind of in la la land as we gave up a long TD pass and then followed it up with a turnover on downs. We were down 14-8 with about a minute to go until the half when Ethan Gienger picked off a pass and bobbed and weaved 52 yards for the tying score. Tom again ran in the PAT and we led 16-14 at the break. We caught our breath and came out with some solid defense and two scores to lead 30-14 early in the fourth quarter. Tom scored on a 5 yard run and Ethan added a rushing score of his own from 30 yards out. Colo had a good drive to pull within 8 at 30-22 but Ethan iced it away with a 27 yard scamper to pay dirt to put the victory in hand. That 36-22 victory moves us to 1-2 for the year. The second half again was a pretty good half of football but we need two halves. We need to figure out how to get going earlier. We need to improve our effort and execution every snap. If we all do this, the sky is the limit. Don’t be satisfied with this. We are way better than this and we need to keep building. Ethan had a nice night with 117 yards rushing, the pick 6, and 3 tackles. Tom finished with 77 yards rushing to go with 8 tackles on defense. Drake Blakesley added 33 yards rushing and Braydon Rohrer had 25 yards on the ground to get our 252 total rushing yards. Defensively we were led by Cody Gebel with 10 stops with 3 of them being behind the line of scrimmage. Tom added 8 and Braydon 7 to go along with 6 from Drake, 3 each from Ethan, Ian White, Cole Engel, and Braden Vanderkolk, 2 stops for Trey Eggers and 1 tackle for Casey Knaack, Zane Stice, Braden Sexton, and Auston Wittgreve. Danny Gleissner also spent time on the field to aid in the victory. Our next action will be Monday September 24 at Janesville against the Wildcats beginning after the junior high game around 6:00 pm. On Monday October 1 we will travel to Rockford for a contest against a Corn Bowl conference foe. This game will also begin around 6:30 pm following the junior high contest. Come out and see the Rebels of the future. See you on the sidelines.
