TRAER – Big plays paved the way as the Class A No. 2 Gladbrook-Reinbeck football team got out to a fast start en route to a 42-0 victory against North Tama in Friday’s District 5 opener. It was the first win by more than one score for the Rebels (3-0, 1-0) this season. The reigning state champions galloped out to a 28-0 lead after the opening quarter and eased to the win from there. Gladbrook-Reinbeck converted two North Tama fumbles into touchdowns in the opening period. A 73-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Lott to Seth Gretillat, and Walker Thede’s 56-yard punt return for a score were the backbreaking plays in the first period. Parker Bown opened the scoring with a 7-yard run to paydirt, and Josh Peterson’s 5-yard scoring run contributed to Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s fast start. Thede tacked on a 49-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and Bown’s second 7-yard touchdown dash rounded out the scoring in the third. North Tama (1-2, 0-1) finished the night with four turnovers and got outgained 264-128 in total offense by the Rebels, who have now won four-straight in the series. Lott completed each of his three passing attempts for 99 yards, while Thede was 1-for-1 for 10 yards. Matt Roeding had three catches for 36 yards, and Gretillat’s first-career grab went for a long touchdown. Peterson led the offense with 52 yards rushing on eight attempts, Thede had 44 yards, Colton Clark gained 30 yards and Bown totaled 27. Thomas Mussig led the Rebel defense with 6.5 tackles. Mason Skovgard had two quarterback sacks, while Roeding and Erik Knaack both had an interception. Tyler Morrison carried 17 times for 72 yards to lead North Tama, but two first-quarter fumbles proved costly in the loss. Cael Kopriva completed 9-of-18 passing attempts for 66 yards, with Nic Sierra hauling in three receptions for 56 yards.


BGM 47, GMG 0 GARWIN – BGM quarterback Jayce Knight threw three touchdown passes and ran for another three, leading the Bears to their first win, a 47-0 victory against GMG in Friday’s first Class A District 5 contest for both squads. It was the first win of the season for BGM (1-2, 1-0) and the first loss for the host Wolverines (2-1, 0-1). Brock Baldazo led GMG in rushing with 38 yards on 11 carries, while Garrett Groth had 23 yards on four attempts. Groth was 1-for-3 passing, with Cade Bovenmyer hauling in a 14-yard catch. Levi Duden led the Wolverine defense with four solo and six assisted tackles. Chance Faircloth pulled down an interception in the defeat.
