Broad Street Brewing Co. held a Spring Fling Meat Thing on Saturday, May 14. Nine teams competed, from Reinbeck, Grundy Center, Holland, Waterloo, Jesup and Waverly.

Six community members served as judges: Sue Trunck, Erik Skovgard, Mark Thesing, Jerry Smith, Matt Sealman and Bob Watermiller.

Teams arrived around 5 a.m. and spent the day smoking meat for four categories of judging (chicken, pork, pork ribs and “anything goes”).

Judging began at 4 p.m. and each entry was evaluated on taste, texture and appearance. Winners were awarded in each category and a Grand Champion was named.

Spectators were treated to free samples by the participants. Glenda Billerbeck from Indulge served a hot dog bar and pulled pork sandwiches throughout the day.
