REINBECK – Hayley Weber didn’t know she wasn’t going to be in the Rebels’ starting lineup until Friday. She had been a consistent starter for Gladbrook-Reinbeck but Rebel coach Eric Crandall went a different direction against rival AGWSR on Friday night. It sure didn’t bother the Rebel sophomore. Weber finished with 19 points and buried a huge 3-pointer with 1:12 to play in the second overtime that propelled Gladbrook-Reinbeck to a 58-53 win over the Cougars. It was the second straight win for the Rebels (6-8. 4-7), who had lost four in a row prior to the win streak. AGWSR fell to 8-7 overall and 7-4 in NICL West Division play. “We made a couple plays there late to force overtime,” G-R coach Eric Crandall said. “Everyone contributed to this one for sure. “We defended well without fouling and did a much better job on the boards. You can always give effort and we did that tonight.” Nicole Adair also finished with 10 points, six assists, six steals and five rebounds. “She has been a lot more aggressive and getting her own shot lately,” Crandall said of Adair. “That’s good to see because it makes us harder to guard if all five girls are looking to shoot the ball.” Hanna Christopher added eight points and seven rebounds. Britney Keller scored six points and grabbed a team-high 10 boards, and Amber Berendes, who started in Weber’s place, scored eight points and Ellie Stoakes pulled down eight boards and scored seven points. The Rebels had to rally on their home floor though. AGWSR led 18-11 after the first quarter as Becca Wiarda gave the Cougars an early boost with a pair of 3-pointers. But the Cougars went nearly 6 minutes without scoring in the second quarter as G-R’s full-court pressure gave AGWSR fits and turnovers led to the Rebel comeback. “We had way too many turnovers,” AGWSR coach Laurie Gann said. “We played hard and I can’t fault them for that. Too many times though we let the way they play bother us and that was the difference.” Weber scored four straight points to cut the G-R deficit to one and then her 3-point play with 2:21 to play until halftime put the Rebels in front 23-21. The scoring drought by the Cougars was ended when Wiarda drilled another 3. She finished with four 3-pointers in the loss and scored a team-high 14. The game was tied at 32-all after three quarters. The final two buckets were 3-pointers from Wiarda and Weber. The two teams combined to knock down 11 treys in the game. The Cougars looked to again be in control midway through the fourth quarter, but then turnovers once again allowed the home team to rally. “If we handle the press better and don’t turn it over, we probably win the game,” Gann said. “We still need to continue to work on our fundamentals and figure out how to not lose leads.” AGWSR led 41-35 with 3:34 to play after beginning the fourth on a 9-3 run. The lead stayed at six until Christopher, Adair and Berendes all scored to tie the score. And all three buckets came off Cougar miscues. The Rebels had a chance to win it in regulation but couldn’t execute the final play of the quarter. Neither team led by more than two in the first overtime, but the Rebels controlled the final 4 minutes. G-R outscored the Cougars 11-6 in the second overtime and Weber’s 3 ended up being the difference. “She lined that up, and normally I wouldn’t want that shot, but since she was open I want her to shoot with confidence,” said Crandall. “She lined it up and knocked down a big-time shot. “We went with a different lineup. Hayley responded and played well off the bench.” Alexa Johnson, who had 10 points for AGWSR, brought the Cougars within two with 1:28 to play. That’s when Weber lined up the shot from long range and drilled it. Christopher added two free throws with 18 seconds to go and the Rebels ended the Cougars’ two-game win streak. Madison Fryslie chipped in nine points for the Cougars, who will host Aplington-Parkersburg on Tuesday night. Notebook Neither team reached the double bonus in the second half or the overtime periods. The Cougars were in the 1-and-1 bonus with 31 seconds to go in the first overtime and G-R didn’t get bonus free throws until the 3:20 mark of the final overtime.
