Fresh-Soph Rebel Football By: Coach Mike Bengen

On Thursday October 10 we made the long trip to State Center to take on the traditional powerhouse from West Marshall. Coach Winkler and his staff have been together for a long time and they have constructed something very special. Every year they are rated in the state and they have a lot to be very proud of. We had to have a very good effort for us to be successful on this night. You never know how it will go with a long bus ride and all but we were ready to roll. We took the football first and quickly turned it back over to the Trojans to start the game. Not a real good way to start but we responded with a stop. We then marched down the field for a score on Parker Bown’s first of four touchdown runs to give us a 6 – 0 lead which we would never give up. We turned the ball over one more time deep in WM territory but other than that we were pretty solid. We stormed off to a 29-0 victory moving us to 3-0 on the year with two games left. We controlled the ball and the line of scrimmage on offense and we gave up three first downs to the Trojans all night. This turned into a very good test for us and we passed with flying colors. It was a great effort by all of our guys to bring this one home. Parker led the way with his four scores and 206 yards rushing. Erik Knaack and Matt Roeding sheared the quarterback chores and both played pretty well for very limited reps in practice. Dmitriy Strohbehn added his best output of the year with 30 yards rushing and 3 tackles. Carter Murphy chipped in 14 yards late in the game to round out our offensive stat sheet. Defensively it was probably our best effort of the year. We gave up three first downs and recovered two fumbles. Spencer Goos had his best game of the year with 6 tackles as did Thomas Mussig from his inside linebacker spot. Tyler Pierce recovered a fumble, had 5 tackles, and with Parker’s assist caused a safety by tackling the WM tailback in the end zone in the second quarter. Joe Baugus, Joseph Pepe, Slade Wager, and Jaden McGhee added 4 stops each with Jaden also pouncing on a fumble for us. Jed Peterson, Parker, and Dmitriy added 3, John Edler, Jake Mohlis, Carter, and Matt made 1 tackle each. Hunter Beachler and Alex Tscherter also saw a lot of field time to help us move to 3-0 on the year. This was a very good team effort and everyone deserves credit because everyone contributed in one way or another. These guys are really coming together as a group and are improving every night out. Keep it up. Our last action of the year will be on Tuesday October 22 at “The Pit” against a talented Dike New Hartford class. This game will kickoff at 5 pm so please note the early start. This will be the final time to take a peek at G-R football and it future players. Hope to see you on the sidelines.
