PREP VOLLEYBALL: Rebels lead area trio at Waverly-Shell Rock

WAVERLY – Gladbrook-Reinbeck emerged as the best finisher among three area teams at the Waverly-Shell Rock volleyball tournament on Saturday. The Rebels went 2-2 on the day with wins over BCLUW and South Winneshiek. Both BCLUW and AGWSR posted 1-3 days. Gladbrook-Reinbeck (11-13) suffered its only two losses to ranked teams. Class 4A No. 2 Charles City topped the Rebels 21-10, 21-7, while 2A No. 12 Denver prevailed 25-20, 25-19. G-R defeated BCLUW in three (12-21, 21-19, 17-15) and swept South Winneshiek (21-19, 21-15). Hayley Weber led the Rebels with 17 kills to go with 22 digs. Ellie Stoakes and Shelton Hatch both had 13 kills, and Hatch finished 24-for-24 serving with an ace. Brooke Boyle racked up 11 kills and a team-best three blocks. Erin Wentzien tallied 59 digs and was 20-for-21 with two aces. Jenny Schildroth totaled 58 assists and was 37-for-40 serving with eight aces, while Britney Keller contributed eight kills and was 29-for-32 with seven service aces. BCLUW (6-15) collected its lone win against Cedar Valley Christian (25-12, 25-16). The Comets were swept by Charles City (21-11, 21-6) and South Winneshiek (21-13, 21-16). The Comets were led by Reeba Box with 17 kills, 18 digs and five blocks. She was also 22-for-26 serving with three aces. Kendall Scurr added 12 kills and 15 digs, while Mallory Vawter had six kills and 15 digs. Haley Veldhouse chipped in with seven kills, Nicole Montgomery had six and Olivia Callaway five. Nicolette Simpson finished with 38 assists. AGWSR (6-19) defeated Rockford, 21-9, 21-17, for its lone victory. The Cougars were swept by three ranked teams – 1A No. 4 Janesville (21-9, 21-17), Denver (21-15, 21-8) and Charles City (25-10, 25-7). Ella Frazier led AGWSR with 10 kills, Molly Boheman had nine and Kristen Zacharias seven. Olivia Ingledue paced the Cougars with 23 digs, while Jayne Wiarda had 33 assists and was 22-for-23 serving with two aces. Boheman and Shelbi Nederhoff led with two blocks apiece. Each team will host an NICL West Division match on Tuesday. The Rebels meet West Marshall, BCLUW entertains South Tama, and South Hardin visits AGWSR.
