High School Football-No. 8 Redhawks withstand GMG in district opener

GARWIN – Jacob Wrage threw three touchdown passes and ran for another as Class A No. 8 North Tama notched its seventh straight victory over GMG, ousting the Wolverines 36-7 in Friday’s District 4 clash. Wrage hooked up with three different receivers for his TD passes and the Redhawks (3-1, 1-0) got out to a 22-0 lead at the break and 36-0 after three quarters. Mitchell Boerm, Damon Spencer and Jacob Watson were all on the receiving ends of scoring strikes, and Wrage added a 5-yard touchdown run of his own for North Tama’s final points. GMG’s Luke Petty punched it in from 1 yard out with 1:19 left in the game to account for the Wolverines’ lone score – his third touchdown in the last two weeks. Blake Warren led GMG (1-3, 0-1) with 162 yards rushing on just 18 carries, and he also had two catches for 33 yards. Petty picked up 43 rushing yards and was the leading receiver with three grabs for 52 yards. Quarterback Austin Vaughn finished 5-for-7 for 85 yards with one interception, and he also was the Wolverines’ top tackler with 11 stops and an interception. Warren had seven tackles and a fumble recovery, and Lucas Catherwood chipped in six tackles. North Tama plays host to Iowa Valey (3-1, 0-1) in next Friday’s district contest, while GMG goes on the road to face Grundy Center (0-3, 0-1).
