30 Years Ago February 24, 1989 Randy Beichley was chosen as the 1989 Outstanding Young Farmer at the Jaycee Winter All-State February 4. At the regular meeting of the Gladbrook City Council, the first reading to adopt a resolution for an economic development grant program for the purpose of residential property was passed. Announcement is being made of the engagement and approaching marriage of Sara M. Kramer of Denver, Colorado, and Scott A. Winke of Arvada, Colorado. Mr. and Mrs. Mark B. Schaeferle, Fallbrook, California, announce the engagement of their daughter, Elizabeth B. Schaeferle to 2nd Lt. Mark Thomas Dufton. Mark’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. William Dufton of Methven, Maryland. 40 Years Ago March 2, 1979 Mr. and Mrs. Darrel Richards of Garwin announce the engagement of their daughter, Sue, to John Hlas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Hlas of Toledo. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Speicher, Cedar Rapids, became the parents of a son, Matthew Dean, born February 24. He also has a brother, Christopher, 7, and a sister, Amy, 4. Mrs. Speicher is the former Susan Lorensen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Lorensen of Garwin. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Speicher, Gladbrook. Garwin Roughriders captured the Class A sectional basketball title last week at LeGrand and defeated Iowa Valley of Marengo in first round district play Tuesday night. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Beenken will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Kevin Garvey won 5th place in the State Wrestling Tournament, which was held February 22, 23, and 24 in Des Moines. Mr. and Mrs. H. Don Osborne have announced the engagement of their daughter, Kimberly, to John Charles Salistean of Omaha, Nebraska. Kimberly’s grandparents are Dr. and Mrs. H. D. Osborne.


50 Years Ago February 14, 1969 The Park Hill Church of God was the scene of the wedding of Mrs. Marie Oaks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Schoel of Gladbrook, and Gordon Hartzell of Marshalltown. Mr. and Mrs. Morse R. Shirk, Gladbrook, became the parents of a boy Monday at Evangelical Hospital in Marshalltown. Dr. and Mrs. K. R. Stojohann of Boone are the parents of a girl. She has been named Kimberly Ann. This is their first child. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. John Kuehl of Davenport and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Stojohann of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. James W. Spiers announce the engagement of their daughter, Susan Annette, to Jerry F. Hardisty, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul F. Hardisty of Corning. Mr. and Mrs. Ward Handorf of Gladbrook met Sadayoshi Nagashima, a young farmer from Japan, in Des Moines. As a participant in the Iowa Farm Bureau visiting young farmer program. Nagashima will spend the next 11 months living and working on the Handorf farm. 60 Years Ago February 20, 1959 Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schroeder will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Lloyd Plaehn of Reinbeck, Tuesday, was elected president of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of Tama County to succeed Wm. C. Wiese of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Koester will celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary. 70 Years Ago February 18, 1949 Mr. and Mrs. Joe Yuhl of the Amity community, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Helen, to Russell S. Soper, of Sioux City. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Kline will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Loren Mehaffy, of Burlington, are the parents of a daughter born to them early Sunday. She has been named Janet Ann. Mrs. Mehaffy was the former Arlene Rehder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Rehder. Mr. and Mrs. Claus Junge are the parents of a son born to them on Saturday. He has been named Melvin Ray. They have another son, Marvin. Mr. and Mrs. Loren Luethje are the parents of son born to them on February 10. He has been named Ralph David and this is their first child. Mr. and Mrs. John Schoel are the parents of a son born to them on Tuesday. This is their first child and he has been named Timothy John. The mother was the former Fern Lage. LaVina Arlene Volkens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Volkens of Gladbrook, and Charles Steve Rohach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Rohach of Garwin, were united in marriage. 80 Years Ago February 17, 1939 Lloyd Chishek, 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Chishek, passed away at Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown, following a week’s illness of emphysema, resulting from a serious illness of pneumonia for several weeks. Each year it is the usual custom of Gladbrook High School students to vote by ballot for a basketball king and queen. Cleon Schoel was the lucky boy to be chosen king and his attendants were Gaylord Stauffer and Donald Luckow. The queen selected was Doris Goettsch and her attendants were Melissa Stauffer and Helen Stammer. 90 Years Ago February 21, 1929 Miss Mary E. Lynch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lynch of Green Mountain, and Clarence Raymond Claussen, of Beaman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claus J. Claussen, living three miles west of Gladbrook in Vienna township, were united in marriage. Miss Vivian Lavere Long, of Conrad, and Louis Vry, of Beaman, were united in marriage. Dr. and Mrs. O. W. Rest, of Chicago, are the parents of a daughter born February 13. The little Miss has been named Margaret Ann. Dr. Rest if a former Gladbrook man. Mrs. Albert Dierks of this place, underwent a Caesarian operation at the Deaconess Hospital Friday when she gave birth to a son. The mother is improving and the son is doing nicely.
