Nutrition and sports performance class offered at GCMH
GRUNDY CENTER – What a young person eats in the days and hours before his or her next sporting event can impact performance in the game or meet. High school and middle school student athletes, parents, and coaches are invited to learn about the impact of nutrition on sports performance at the “Sports Nutrition 101” class offered by Grundy County Memorial Hospital and Grundy Family YMCA.
The one-hour program is offered Monday, July 18, 6:00 p.m. at the hospital. Registered, licensed dietitian Crystal Petersen will share her knowledge. “While eating cannot take the place of training and conditioning for your sport, eating well does help an athlete get more out of practice and competition,” says Petersen. “I’m often asked about the timing of meals and snacks with an upcoming game or meet, and the timing of food is important to the student athlete’s performance,” she remarks. Petersen will touch on a variety of topics in the one-hour program, including:
Fueling to maximize training and conditioning
Fueling and hydrating for peak performance
Eating practices that are detrimental to performance
The program takes place in the hospital’s Education Room. Use Entrance #3 on the west side of the hospital. Registration is through the Grundy Family YMCA, either via the website www.blackhawkymca.org, or in person at the Y, located inside the Grundy Center High School or at its new facility, 102 E G Avenue, Grundy Center, beginning July 1. There is a modest cost for the class, and space is limited. You may phone Brenda Schmidt at 319-824-4161 with questions.
