It’s that time of year again! Large Group Speech, Districts contest. Each year the

Gladbrook-Reinbeck high school sends students to participate in the event. The students are

directed by speech director, Mrs. Johanns. After about two months of practice they are ready

and excited as ever. Districts will be held in La Porte City, IA, on January 24th. If the group

event gets a 1 from the judge at Districts it means that they will be able to participate at State

Speech. State Speech Contest will be held in Decorah, IA, on February 7. At State Contest

they have an opportunity to participate at All State if they get a 1 by all the judges that they

perform for, are nominated by a judge. All State Group Speech will be held in Ames, at ISU, on

February 21. Here is the list of our members and what category they will be participating in. As

you will see there are many students who participate in more than one event.

You ask, What is Group Mime? What is Improv? Those are just some of the examples of the

group categories. Group Mime is where you have a group of 1 to 5 people who have to create

a scene without talking. If you haven’t seen a mime group, it can be quite entertaining and

also difficult. Group Improv is where a group of two or three members are to pick from three

“situations” and given a short amount of time to discuss. They then have to create a scene from

that. If you’ve never seen an Improv group they can be really fun and hilarious to watch.

If you have nothing going on those days, I encourage you to go to those events. The

students have put a lot of work into and it will be fun and exciting to see them perform.
