Hawkeye’s new fire science program to begin in the fall

WATERLOO-There are approximately 15,500 volunteer and career firefighters across Iowa that make up the membership of the Iowa Firefighters Association. With the retirement of baby boomers, there is a steady need for firefighters in Iowa.

To help fill that need, Hawkeye Community College is offering a new Fire Science program this fall and interested individuals can register for classes beginning March 24. The Fire Science program will provide students with essential skills for entry-level technical or administrative careers in fire service. Students develop the knowledge and understanding of building construction, management, and fire behaviors and hazards. They will receive hands-on training in fire suppression, protection, prevention, investigation, and safety techniques and are prepared to react appropriately in emergency situations.

Hawkeye’s Fire Science program follows the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) curriculum by the U.S. Fire Administration. Designed in cooperation with local fire department officials, the program provides education paths for individuals seeking a fire services career and for practicing firefighters to advance their careers. Through this program, fire service providers will be able to protect life, property, and the environment. Credit may be awarded toward the degree for existing certifications and verified industry trainings.

The college offers both through credit and continuing education classes for those who want a career as a firefighter, as well as those who are volunteer firefighters. Learn more at www.hawkeyecollege.edu/go/fire-science or call the Admissions office at 319-296-4000.
