Ames, Iowa Brandon Bruhn, of Grundy County, was awarded the $1,000 Orscheln 4-H Scholarship through the Iowa 4-H Foundation at the reception on Sunday, June 5 in Ames.
The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced the recipients of over 70 Iowa 4-H college scholarships valued at almost $70,000. Recipients accepted their awards at the Foundation’s Scholarship Reception held in the Scheman Building at Iowa State University. Over 500 applications were submitted and scholarships were awarded to recipients from 33 counties across the state of Iowa with a wide variety of 4-H experiences.
Bruhn will attend Iowa State University and major in Animal Science with a minor in Horticulture. After his Bachelor degree, he plans to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine to open his own practice in a rural community.
He wants to use his knowledge to help others with livestock and educate youth on how to care for their animals, which he has experience with now.
“My most important contribution is working with the younger 4-H members and being a role-model,” Bruhn said. “I enjoy working with younger members and their animals or talking with them about their projects.”
“Every year we are in awe of the ways these young people make their communities a better place,” said Albert Grunenwald, Iowa 4-H Foundation Executive Director. “We are thankful to have donors who want to acknowledge the students’ hard work and invest in 4-H’ers who will continue to change the world regardless of where they go to school or what they study.”
The Orscheln 4-H Scholarships are provided by Orscheln Farm and Home L.L.C. in Moberly, Mo. Each year five of these scholarships are given to applicants who reside in Orscheln Farm and Home trade area counties.
These scholarships are given to incoming freshmen in Iowa State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences or will major in a family and consumer sciences field. The recipients must also have been active 4-H’ers during their four years in high school and exhibit good character and leadership potential.
