Meeting on New FDA antibiotic guidelines for livestock producers

Grundy Center, Iowa Iowa livestock producers have the opportunity to learn about the new FDA mandated antibiotic guidelines at a meeting hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach (ISUEO).

The meeting will be held Tuesday, March 29, 3:30 to 5 pm at the Dike Public Library, 133 E. Elder Street in Dike, according to ISUEO swine specialist Mark Storlie.

“The new FDA antibiotic rules begin January 1, 2017,” Storlie said. “Before that time, we are informing producers, veterinarians and allied industry about the new procedures and how it will affect their operations.”

The meeting will focus on antibiotic access via veterinarian relationship, veterinary feed directives (VFD), prescriptions and required record keeping. Dr. Chris Rademacher, ISU Extension Swine Veterinarian, will be the lead presenter.

Background of the FDA guidelines

Why antibiotics are being reclassified

What drugs will require a veterinarian prescription or VFD

Importance of a veterinarian/client/patient/relationship (VCPR)
