Luther College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Baldwin, will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Waterloo West High School Auditorium in Waterloo, Iowa. Luther College senior Casey Tecklenburg of Dysart, Iowa, is a percussionist in the orchestra.

The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. A free will offering will be taken.

The orchestra will perform “Petite Suite” by Claude Debussy, “Polovtsian Dances” from the opera “Prince Igor” by Alexander Borodin and “Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88” by Antonn Dvo?k. The concert is part of Symphony Orchestra’s 2016 tour of the Upper Midwest.

Symphony Orchestra, Luther’s largest and oldest orchestral ensemble, is one of Luther’s four main touring ensembles. Their annual tour schedule includes a three-week residency in Vienna, Austria, every four years. More than 75 student musicians, representing a variety of academic majors, perform with the orchestra. Many orchestra members also perform in choir, band, jazz and chamber ensembles.

Daniel Baldwin, Luther professor of music, has served as director of orchestral activities at Luther since 1997. In addition to his work as conductor of the Luther College Symphony and Chamber Orchestras and the Opera Workshop, he teaches conducting.

Luther is home to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world with six choirs, three orchestras, three bands, two jazz ensembles and nearly 1,000 student musicians. Luther students perform in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons and master classes. More than 300 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, jazz, church music and performance.
