Linda Betsinger McCann to speak in Aplington

Linda Betsinger McCann will be speaking at Maple Manor in Aplington on Wednesday, January 27, at 6:30 p.m. about the Civilian Conservation Corps. She is currently researching this topic and welcomes pictures and memories that might be included in the book. She will have copies of all her books available for purchase.

The CCCs were active from 1932 to 1942 during the Depression Years. Men from 18 to 25 years of age were involved in all kinds of jobs, from road building, working on state parks, to soil erosion, and drought control, to planting trees, and building dams. They were also allowed to take classes in the evening. They were called Dollar-a-Day Boys because they were paid $25 per month, and $20 of that had to be sent home to their families. Beeds Lake, Pine Lake in Eldora, and Backbone State Park are the well-known sites of their work in this area.

Linda is the author of nine books published by Iowan Books. She enjoys speaking to libraries, schools, and organizations, and can be contacted at losttownsofiowa@gmail.com .
