County historical landmark project a part of Pioneer Craft Fair

On September 13th, during Pioneer Craft Fair, Grundy County Historian Lois Stork is seeking your help in identifying historical landmarks throughout Grundy County. She is attempting to locate former one room

country schoolhouses, churches and creameries that populated our landscape years ago, with the goal to

identify each with a marker at the site. She is working, in conjunction with, Grundy County Barn Quilts to further develop tourism in Grundy County. To date, Stork has restored the Fairfield Township #5 Country Schoolhouse, the 145 year old Fairfield Chapel, and a 115 year old Fairfield two-story farmhouse, all of which are located on her farmstead in Fairfield Township north of Dike.

Stork will be set up inside the Brick Schoolhouse Museum from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. She would love for you to stop by and share with her what you know about the early days of Grundy County. She will be joined that day by a representative of the Barn Quilts organization.

The Pioneer Craft Fair will begin at 11:00 AM and run until 4:00 PM on Sunday, September 13th. It is a non-commercial event emphasizing old-time crafts and activities. This year it will include lots of activities such

as timber framing, a petting zoo, games for children, flint knapping, beekeeping, crocheting, spinning & weaving, kettle corn, musical entertainment by The Other Band and Celtic fingerstyle guitarist Jerry Barlow,

Black Hawk Button Club display, railroad displays, fireplace stew in the log cabin, butter churning, country schoolhouse exhibits, Buckskinner camp, horse-drawn trolley rides, food stands and farmer’s market.

Exhibits in the museum building and ag hall/heritage center, as well as the gift shop, will be open throughout the day for your enjoyment.

All activities are free of charge. Food and vendor items will be available for purchase at the event.
