Candy makers taste sweet victory at the Iowa State Fair

The top candy makers from across the state squared off in the Chocolate Storybook Candies competition judged Friday at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Harold Magg of Spirit Lake took the Sweepstakes honors. Carole Miller of Otley and Cynthia Murphy of Des Moines tied for Reserve Sweepstakes honors.

In the Fudge division, Magg snagged First Place Overall and Third Place Overall. Shirley Howes claimed Second Place Overall.

Phil Dicks of Grundy Center was awarded First Place Overall in the Chocolate Works division. Jeanene Peiffer of Sigourney earned Second Place Overall. Third Place Overall was awarded to Harold Magg of Spirit Lake.

In the Variations of Candy division, Dennis Roupe of Ankeny won First Place Overall, while Sharon Krause of Waukee took Second Place Overall. Marianne Carlson of Jefferson claimed Third Place Overall.

In the Teen Candy Maker division, Gabby McCoy of Hartford won First Place Overall and Kaylea Van Regenmorter of Baxter took Second Place Overall. Jennifer Leeper of Altoona was awarded Third Place Overall.

All First Place Overall winners received a $100 cash reward, while Second Place Overall winners took home a $75 cash reward. Third Place Overall winner received a $50 cash reward.

Entries were judged on flavor, texture and general appearance.
