G-R SCHOOL BOARD
Thursday evening the Gladbrook-Reinbeck School Board approved increasing
administrative salaries. Supt. Tim Kuehl will receive$110,000 and
Principal Bill Parker will receive $90,000. Kuehl will be reimbursed for
his monthly Blackberry data plan and Parker was offered the same. Kuehl
was allowed to carryover vacation days to a maximum of 30 days and Parker
will get two additional personal days, from 4 to 6. Both Kuehl and Parker
were offered the HSA health insurance plan with a donation made toward
deductibility.
PCI made an offer of $4,000 to purchase the bus lot in Reinbeck and will
donate an additional $13,000 to the school.
The district will receive one-time stimulus money from the federal
government and Kuehl told how G-R can make the best use of the funds. Some
of the money will go toward Title 1 and special education.
The 2008-09 budget was amended to show a decrease of $30,000 in Total
Support Services due to less expenditures than anticipated, increasing
Non- instructional Programs by $30,000 due to greater expenditures, and
increasing Total Other Expenditures by $28,500 due to increased expenses
in capital projects expenses in FY09.
There will be changes in the high school handbooks next fall that pertain
to students participating in school activities needing to be present in
school for the entire day of the activity. Only under extraordinary
circumstances will this be waived. The other change pertains to students
using cell phones during school hours without permission.
On a 1st offense students will lose the phone until the end of the day and
serve a detention in the room where offense occurred. On the 2nd offense,
students will lose the phone until a parent picks it up and will serve a
detention in the room where offense occurred. The 3rd and other offenses
will be at the discretion of the principal.
New course offerings at the high school for 2009-10 will be: Math for
Liberal Arts, Exploring Physical Science, Psychology, Intro to Engineering
Design, Principles of Agronomy, Principles of Horticulture, Survey of the
Animal Industry and Natural Resources and the Environment. All are dual
credit courses that will be taught at the high school with own staff.
Nathan Wrage was hired as custodian at the Gladbrook campus, starting at
$12.25/hour.
Bus driver contracts for special education contracts were approved for
Deanna Spear driving to Dysart and Mark Bystricky driving to Devonshire.
They will both receive $27.14/trip. Karen Bassett will drive to River
Hills and will receive $44.40/trip.
The new head girls basketball coach will be Bruce Bailey. His salary will
be $4,257. Middle School volleyball coach will be Michelle Keller, her
salary being $1,330.
The resignation of Brynna Hemseth, high school social studies was accepted.
The district will pay gas and motel room for Angela Wrage and her mother,
Jennifer, to attend the Future Problem Solvers International competition
in Michigan.
Chris Frischmeyer reported to the board that they did get the $300,000
USDA loan at zero interest for the GR Daycare in Reinbeck. The district
will start payments the 3rd year as payments are waived the first two
years. The bid came in less than the anticipated $600,000 and will include
a safe room.
Mandy Gehring presented a revised budget for the Gladbrook Daycare and
said they are still working with the city on financing. She said there are
17 4-year olds and 9 3-year olds signed up for next years preschool
class. Kuehl has been talking with Piper Jeffries, bonding attorney,
regarding the schools portion of the daycare funding and want to combine
it with financing for the concession stand at the football field.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck and North Tama will share a junior high wrestling
program next year, as well as the high school program.
A contract with Timberline Billing Services for Medicaid reimbursements
was approved.
Principal Mike Studts reported another successful blood drive for the
National Honor Society. They were able to produce over 50 units of blood
which was above their goal.
Principal Parker said summer school letters were sent out to 61 students
(32 students at Reinbeck and 29 students at Gladbrook).Summer school will
be held June 29 – July 17. Sarah Block and Diane Staker will be the summer
school teachers in Reinbeck while Lindsay Erickson and Lyn Purvis will
teach summer school in Gladbrook.
Darin King, Val Ehlers and Supt. Kuehl plan to attend the IASB District
Meeting in Cedar Rapids on June 16th.
Board members were given the 2010 Legislative Priorities and are to select
their top five priorities and have them ready for the June 3rd work
session. The work session will be held in Gladbrook, starting at 7 p.m.
A picnic will be held at the park in Lincoln on June 5th for all employees
of the district, at 1 p.m. to commemorate the 20-year anniversary of G-R.
The next regular board meeting will be Thursday, June 18, 7 p.m., in
Gladbrook.
