Karen Handorf hosted fifteen Alpha Study members at her home on Tuesday, October 22. President Pat Clausen opened the meeting with thoughts about October. Marcia Plett in the absence of club Secretary, Claire Handorf, read the secretary’s report which was approved. A note was read from Phyllis Chizek requesting inactive status. She enclosed a dollar to cover the cost of her club booklet. The Treasurer’s report was given and approved. Members were reminded if they haven’t paid their dues, to please do so to Karen Handorf. Old Business: Bonnie Murty, Corn Carnival cookbook liaison, reported that the committee met and recipe sheets will be distributed this fall. The committee is requesting everyone submit three favorite recipes by April 2021 as the cookbooks will be available for sale in 2022. Kathy Herink shared that the Christmas outing will be a lunch on December 10 at Sweets On Main in Traer. She passed a sign-up sheet around stating that members pay $14.00 that day to cover the set menu, drink and tip. New Business: President Clausen asked for input concerning a member’s former membership going towards accumulation of total membership years. Kathy Herink said no, membership years start over when a person rejoins the club. President Clausen shared that a committee will be reviewing the club’s constitution and that the constitution should be printed each year in the club booklets. Avriel Koester made the motion that the constitution only deal with long term items and an annual budget be separate and presented each year. It was seconded by Lisa Reinhard. Bonnie Murty of the program committee introduced Lisa Reinhard who reviewed Lessons from Lucy, The Simple Joys of an Old Happy Dog by Dave Barry an award-winning syndicated columnist and author. Barry tells the stories of his childhood pets and how later in life, Lucy joined his family. Through humor, sarcasm, and some regret, Dave, at age 70, discusses the lessons he (and perhaps all of us) could learn from watching Lucy. The seven lessons he covers are a testament to how we could all improve our lives by simply learning from a dog growing old gracefully. Read the book and appreciate all you have. Karen served a pumpkin dessert, candies, nuts, coffee and tea.
