Gladbrook Women’s Club

Seventeen members of the Gladbrook Women’s Club met Thursday, February 9th at Independent Living. President Shirley Young called the meeting to order and read a tidbit on “eating healthy”. Vice-President Avriel Koester introduced Keely Harken from Grundy County Memorial Hospital/Unity Point Health. She gave a review of the Hospital, saying it opened in 1952. In 2004-05 the hospital received an exterior facelift and addition for the expansion of Outpatient Services, as well as a modernization of its first floor physical plant. In 2009-10 a new 18 bed inpatient area and emergency department were constructed as well as a remodeled surgery area. In 2016-17 an expansion of the clinic space used by visiting medical specialists will allow more patients to be served. The 1952 second floor will be modernized with a new roof, windows and efficient workspace for administration and support staff. The project will be funded by hospital operating reserves, general obligation bonds and community donations. The hospital currently employs 200 employees. They currently have 17 specialty clinics and are making more room for specialty clinics. Harken said they hope to have their 3D mammography available in a couple months. The Grundy Hospital Emergency Room has been in the top 5% of emergency rooms across the nation for the last 8 years. In 6 months 24,462 patients visited the hospital. $9,336 in community health grants were given in 2016. Dietician Crystal Petersen will hold four clinics in the next couple months; high blood pressure class will meet in February 20, 2017; Type II and pre diabetes class will meet March 20, 2017 and a class on high cholesterol will meet April 17, 2017. To register for a class call 319-824-5085. The goal is to support your doctor’s guidance with practical advice on lifestyle changes. Simple changes to what you eat can have an impact on your health condition beyond what can be accomplished with medication alone. Shirley said we would be discussing Holiday Happenings and what the wishes were of members. A poll will be taken to keep the same, make some changes and drop completely. Following the discussion members had the option to select one of the 3 options. The tabulation showed that members want to change how we do Holiday Happenings. There will be more discussion in the upcoming months as to how we will do this. Shirley informed everyone that Women’s Club is not involved with the blood drive at this time as currently LifeServe does not have a coordinator from Gladbrook. Vivian reported on Senior Citizens in April and it will be held on the 13th, our regular meeting date. The March 9th meeting we will have Teresa Barnes from Tama County Iowa Child Advocacy speak to us. Hostesses will be Sandy Raum, Karen Lage and June Klinefelter. Avriel read the birthdays and anniversaries for February and March. Shirley closed the meeting. Hostesses Shirley Young and Juanita Fulster served a delicious lunch. Rev. Carol was unable to assist.
