Red Ribbon Week observed at GMG By Margaret Thomsen
GMG Junior and Senior High School students observed Red Ribbon Week with a variety of activities. Dress up day and door decorating were two fun activities. The 8th graders won the door decorating and were treated to yummy ice cream sundaes. GMG Guidance Counselor Mrs. Amanda Pearce said, “Red Ribbon Week is held to raise awareness of drug and alcohol prevention. The seventh and eighth graders and I planted red tulips out front of the school. This will be another reminder of Red Ribbon Week when they bloom next spring.” Highlight of the week was an assembly with Tama County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Kendall and his partner, Canine Deputy Ryno. Deputy Randall explained how Ryno is used for patrol, searches, rescue, apprehension of suspects and drug search. Having a Deputy address the students and talk about drug use and addiction was a great addition to Red Ribbon Week.
