Tama Co. Legion Auxiliary
The Tama County American Legion ladies hosted a picnic dinner for over 100 residents in Malloy Hall at the Iowa Veterans Home on Saturday, August 6. This has been an annual project for many years, starting back in the 1970’s when the residents were bused to the Union Grove Youth Center for the meal. With air conditioning came the decision to take the food to the IVH instead of the residents to the Center as it was usually a very warm August day. We try to serve a typical ‘picnic’ style meal with fried chicken, meat balls, cheezy potatoes, fresh sweet corn and tomatoes along with fresh fruit, potato salad and deviled eggs. This topped with homemade pie leaves residents with smiles and very full stomachs. The Units of the County furnishing food and helping were from Traer, Elberon, Clutier, Tama, Toledo, Garwin and Gladbrook. Monday, August 8 found several Gladbrook Unit members at a 9-11a.m. brunch ready to pay their 2017 membership dues. President Jeanne and Membership Chair Jolene are collecting the $20 dues for Senior members and #3 for our Junior members as we prepare for another Auxiliary year. State President Sharon Anderson of Des Moines has chosen ‘Hearts on Fire for Veterans” as her theme as we again put our energy and talents into helping our veterans and their families. We always welcome new members and if interested in joining or transferring to our Unit give any member a call.
