Gladbrook Auxiliary
The Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary held their April 11 meeting in the dining room at Westbrook Acres as they welcomed over 30 members and friends on this windy and chllly spring day. President Jeanne opened the meeting with everyone repeating the Pledge to our flag, followed by prayer by Chaplain Joyce. We dispensed with the reading of the minutes of the special meeting and Veterans Birthday pot-luck as they were published in the Northern-Sun paper. Auxiliary dues will remain the same: $20 for Seniors and $3 for Juniors for the 2016-17 year. The data form has been sent to Department. State anticipates raising dues after Jan 1, 2017 by $3 for Seniors and to $5 for Juniors. A printed treasurers report will be filed for audit. Projects recognized the past month included sewing and delivering 84# or rolled carpet rags to the IVH rug looms, cleaning the Memorial Bldg with Joyce Swangel, June Klinefelter, Kathy Herink, Sharon Shouse, Marilyn Carstensen, Jane Frericks and Jolene helping. Sharon furnished breadstix and Marie Benda cookies for the coffee breaks. Barb Beichley again sent a memorial donation ($100) for her mother’s 92nd birthday to be used as we want. Jeanne announced Tama County Government Day on Wednesday, April 13 at the Reinig Center with Becky Fish, Marilyn Carstensen and Joyce Swangel helping and furnishing the 4 dozen cookies. The Third District Spring Conference of the Legion and Auxiliary will be held at Parkersburg on Saturday, April 16 with 8am registration. Tama County Units will also be playing bingo at the Veterans Home on Wednesday, April 20. We will be carpooling from the Memorial Bldg at 12:45. Call Marilyn Carstensen or Jolene Denbow if interested. The next Tama County meeting will be held in Elberon on Tuesday evening, 7pm, with the County endorsement of Nicole Clapp for Nat’l President 2019-20 planned. Our next Auxiliary meeting is the May 9th Mother’s Day Tea at 1:30 in the Memorial Bldg. We will be recognizing those members lost this past year, membership awards and Ashley Sieh, our only Junior member graduating to Senior status. A special program is being planned. Sue Koster was then introduced as she had planned a program of Lifelong Songs with a sing-a long of old time favorites led by Joyce Swangel. Events in your life began as a “happy child’, to a beautiful 5’2”, finding true love, marriage, a new home on the range, the first baby, activities of children growing up as music, athletics and favorites recognizing our Faith, our Freedom and onto our peace at our end of life, ending with May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You. A new Past Presidents Plaque was presented and purchased with a memorial donation by the Beck family in honor of their mother, Life Member Doris Kline Beck. An appropriate plaque will be attached. Happy Birthday was sung to all April honorees as Cathy Barnes and Kay Purvis served everyone bars and drinks which were enjoyed.
