At the exciting and beautifully decorated Spanky’s Restaurant Meeting Room, our hostess, Shirley Young, enthusiastically greeted us. President Joan Raum opened the meeting by reading Helen Steiner Rice’s “Easter Thoughts for These Troubled Times.” The author begins by explaining the restlessness of people in her time, smoothly moving to a prayer for Faith and Love. She amazingly describes people in our time as well and emphasizes our need for similar prayers. Eighteen members responded to roll call. The Secretary report and Treasurer report were read and accepted. No correspondence was received. With no Old Business to discuss, the group’s attention moved to New Business, learning that the Nominating Committee has met and will give the results at the next meeting. The Social and Program Committee reported that the Spring Fling details are “under construction.” Our further After-Prom contributions will be discussed at the next meeting. Bev reminded the group that the Library still needs financial support for its Summer Reading Program. Joan announced that the next meeting will be at Phyllis Chizek’s home on April 12; she then closed the meeting with another reading from Helen Steiner Rice. “Eternal Spring” describes how Nature responds to this wonderful change of seasons; then the author compares that to our change from physical earth to spiritual eternity. Deb, on behalf of the Program Committee, introduced Avriel Koester and her review of “Dead Wake” by Erik Larson. She pronounced this detailed and suspenseful account of the 1915 sinking of the Lusitania as “very good” and kept the group spellbound as she told how the book juxtaposed what was happening aboard the cruise ship and in the German U boat (the Hunted and the Hunter). Other contrasts were the social standing of the diverse passengers aboard the Cunard Line ship, the captains of the two sea vessels, the leaders of England, Germany, and the US (which had not yet entered WW I), and the geo-political attitudes and actions before and after the ruthless attack and human disaster. When we were able to speak, we shared our responses, desire to read the book, and other related information. Our time together ended with Mandy Boldt’s lovely Chocolate and Creamy Dessert, Nuts, Hershey’s Kisses, and choice of coffee or tea. Thanks, to Shirley and Mandy for these succulent treats.
