Gladbrook Auxiliary
The Gladbrook Legion/Auxiliary January meeting was postponed last week due to frigid temperatures until Monday, January 25. Then Mother Nature surprised many with 2-3 inches of snow that afternoon with almost blizzard conditions, but Bob Knaack and Terry Schmitz had the soup made and the meeting went on as scheduled. Several of our community volunteers from the Gladbrook Ambulance crew and firemen braved the weather to enjoy the 6:30 supper as our annual appreciation for their services. Kay Lowry gave an informative Legislative report to the joint group before we reconvened for our separate business meetings. In the absense of President Jeanne and V-P Trudi, Sec’y Jolene Denbow presided, opening the meeting with prayer by Chaplain Joyce. New members, Sharon Shouse and Jane Frericks were warmly welcomed to the group. The Auxiliary charter was draped for three members lost since last June: Edith Whannel, Deb Denbow Weber and Jean Marquart. A memorial donation was recognized in honor of Deb Denbow Weber for new flag standards. Roll call was answered by two officers. The minutes of the last meeting were dispensed with and only highlights reviewed. Communications were read from IVH for 88# carpet rags from last fall, 6 dozen cookies for the Open House furnished by Cathy Barnes, Jane Frericks and Joyce Bern and a thank you from the Kids Club committee for our donation of the nativity pop-up scenes given to each shopper by Rev Krees. Those helping with the IVH Gift wrap were Dick and Jolene Denbow, Loran and Jane Frericks, Ron Busch, Bob Knaack, Cathy Barnes, and Eleanor Lott. Jolene reported that 238 members had been sent in toward our 298 goal for 2016. We have 2 new senior members and 4 junior members signed up. No old business presented. Under new business: Poppy proceeds are to go into the Auxiliary Welfare Fund to be used for Veterans and their families. It is hoped to again remember our Legion members who are ill, hospitalized or in need of a visit to receive a fruit plate from the Auxiliary. Those living away will receive a gift certificate. We ask that everyone help let Ron Busch or Dick Denbow know of any member who needs to be remembered. We would also appreciate volunteers to help if asked. Eighteen fruit plates and canteen cards to IVH residents were given out by the Legion at Christmas. Installaton of new members, Jane Frericks and Sharon Shouse was done by Jolene, Joyce, Cathy and Jan Schulz. An Auxiliary pin was presented to them.
