Gladbrook Women’s Club

In the President’s absence, Vice President Avriel Koester called the meeting to order and read a delightful verse about a “Flying Thanksgiving turkey.” The report of the previous meeting was read and approved for filing. June reported the balance as of October 31, with 2 Holiday Happenings deposits made after that. No bills were presented; the report will be filed as read. No correspondence was received. Fortunately for us, Avriel’s cousin, Becky McGregor was available to provide a program about her many quilts. She organized them by Time Periods, Techniques, Family Connections, and Occasions. Each quilted item was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience, as were the three drawings for small quilted items. Thanks to Mary Jane and Avriel for helping fold many of the quilts as Becky finished one narrative after another. For roll call, each member shared a Thanksgiving memory. Pat Clausen introduced and the members welcomed Dr. BJ Reed, a new resident of Gladbrook. Unfinished Business: Karen Handorf showed one of the eight 70-inch tablecloths purchased as appreciation for using the Independent Living dining room and kitchen. Each one will be adjusted to 60-inches. Additionally, she purchased sixteen 4-piece Corelle dinnerware settings and will buy 16 matching sauce dishes. Holiday Happenings committees have everything under control, although the rice lights that have been used the last two years, at least, are missing. If any member knows where they are, please contact the Decorating Committee immediately. Congratulations to GWC members because all tickets have been sold. The Set-up committee will meet at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, 11/15/15; the decorating committee can begin its work an hour or so after that. Anyone with bills is encouraged to submit them as soon as possible. Likewise, Committee reports need to be completed and returned to the Vice President as soon as possible. On the evening of Holiday Happenings, waiters should arrive at 5:45 p.m. Four of them will be assigned to Jolene Denbow to pour drinks before the courses are served. New Business: Barb Muhs from the Tama County Pantry reported, via Jolene, ideas for our Christmas Project. Monetary gifts are still excellent choices. Other ideas include a food pack with the appropriate recipe in it; macaroni and cheese packages; cereal (not necessarily sugary versions); paper items, and dish or hand soaps. Volunteers are needed for the Food Pantry, open on Monday evenings (4-6 p.m.) at the Gladbrook United Methodist Church. Volunteers are also encouraged to help with the Kids Shopping Day on December 12 at Peace United Church of Christ. All interested helpers should be at the information meeting at 8:15 a.m. Club members were reminded of the types or ages of gifts that are needed. The Santa Sack committee will meet at 5:30 the evening of November 19 to stuff the sacks. Thanks to Pat G and Marcy for the nice article in the paper about the upcoming Festival of Trees contest. Karen H passed a sign-up sheet for those who want to attend the Gift Mart in Des Moines on November 20, 2015. Departure is 8:30 from the Methodist Church. Members also signed up for the Christmas Brunch at Binford House in Marshalltown. Each member is to bring and/or wear a broach (antique-looking, if possible). Members were reminded to bring a broach to our Christmas Luncheon at Binford House in December. Spring Tea committee met to select the date for our Spring Tea next spring. The date will be announced at the general meeting in December. Hospice Cookies and Birthdays/Anniversaries finished the official business. The hostesses served Pumpkin Pie Squares, hot apple drink, coffee and fall candy/nuts.
