Alpha Study Club
President Joan Raum, our hostess, opened the meeting by welcoming our newest Alpha Member. Then Joan read a selection from L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Avonlea. The excerpt reminded us that November can resemble either a tired, fretful old woman or a stately, graceful old lady, depending on the weather. Twenty members were present and responded to roll call by describing for what we are thankful. Five members were excused. The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s report were read. No bills were incurred; no correspondence was received. Both reports were approved. Old Business: Discussion about a Festival of Trees display resulted in a book tree theme, with Marcia, Kathy, Avriel and Deb volunteering to work on this project. Joan closed the meeting by sharing the “Top Ten Historical Thanksgiving Facts.”
Rose Russell introduced Marcia Plett who described the plot of The Girl on the Train, by Paula Hawkins. Marcia explained that the fictional work has a sinister overtone featuring the mysterious connections between three women. The story begins with the innocent observations of Rachel traveling daily between Asbury and London, England. Her innocent assumptions about a young couple she sees each day take an ominous turn when the witnesses events that alter the tale she has woven around the pair. Overtime, she manages to unravel the mysteries of her life and the lives of her subjects. Joan Raum served a variety of finger sandwiches, nuts, candy, and drinks to accompany our post-report discussion.
